350 registered cows calve annually
at our headquarter unit, and generally 175 yearling and 2-year-old
Hereford and Angus bulls are sold as breeding stock each year. Additional
sale bulls are provided by cooperator herds. Approximately 1,000 head will
be carried through the winter, which includes a number of commercial
feedlot cattle that are used for carcass evaluation.
Extensive use of production records have been kept on all Wiese & Sons
cattle for over 50 years. Production records combined with current
technologies such as ultrasound and carcass evaluation, help us work
towards a goal of producing an animal that will predictably benefit the
industry. Our production volumes and efficiencies have increased. Because
of these extra efforts, our carrying capacity has increased 25% in the
last decade and our yearling weight EPDs have doubled. Great emphasis has
been placed by our firm combining genetics and nutrition coupled with the
management of the land, has brought about increased herd health, which in
turn has let to a 371 day calving interval for our entire cow herd.

We have made a consistent effort to
increase our efficiency through the early use of records, artificial
insemination, embryo transfer and ultrasound.
Computerization has played an important part in the search for more
thorough examination of the records that we are accumulating on the herd.
